DECKS + EXTERIOR CONSTRUCTION

Deck Builders and Exterior Construction in Sparta, Cookeville, and the Upper Cumberland

Decks and Porches Built as Part of the House.

A deck is a structure attached to your home, and it carries people. It needs footings sized for the load, a ledger properly fastened and flashed against the house, and framing that holds up to Tennessee summers and wet winters. Those are the parts you stop seeing once the boards go down, and they decide how long the deck lasts.

Services include:
Deck Construction • Covered Porches • Front + Back Porches • Deck + Patio Combinations • Railings + Stairs • Outdoor Living Areas

Wood or composite decking

Comparison of pressure-treated wood and composite decking on up-front cost, upkeep, color, splinters and heat in afternoon sun

Pressure-treated wood costs less up front and can be stained any color. It needs cleaning and sealing every few years to hold up.

Composite decking costs more to install. It doesn’t need staining or sealing, and it won’t splinter. It can run hot in full afternoon sun, and it still sits on a wood or steel frame that has to be built right.

We’ll price both for your layout so you can compare real numbers, not brochure claims.

Covered porches

A roof over a porch or deck turns it into a room you can use in the rain and in July. It’s also more involved than an open deck. The new roof has to tie into the existing roofline, carry its own load down to proper footings, and shed water away from the house. That’s construction work, and we manage it that way. Front porch or back porch, new build or a roof over a deck you already have.

The Rest of the Exterior.

The exterior of your home does more than shape how it looks. It’s the first line of protection for everything inside it.

Services include:
Roofing + Roof Replacement • Siding Installation • Window + Door Replacement • Exterior Trim • Gutters + Drainage Improvements

  • Roofing. Full roof replacement and new roofs on additions and porches. We also take on select storm damage and insurance repair work, so tell us if a storm started the conversation.
  • Siding and trim. New siding, replacement siding, and the trim details that keep water out at corners, windows, and doors.
  • Windows and doors. Replacement windows and exterior doors, installed and flashed so they seal.
  • Gutters and drainage. Water that collects at the foundation eventually finds a way in. We look at where it goes after it leaves the gutter.

Ground Work: Retaining Walls, Patios, and Drainage.

Floor-to-ceiling stone masonry by United Home Builders in Middle Tennessee

The Upper Cumberland is not flat. Sloped yards, runoff, and soft ground are a big part of exterior work here.

Services include:
Retaining Walls • Concrete Patios + Walkways • Drainage Improvements

Rick Conley owned and operated a masonry construction company for 26 years, so block, stone, and concrete work is familiar ground for this team.

What Goes Into a Deck or Porch Estimate.

Six factors in a deck or covered porch estimate: size and shape, height off the ground, decking material, railings and stairs, a roof, and the ground

The same handful of things move the price of every deck and porch:

  • Size and shape. Square footage, and whether the shape is simple or has angles and levels.
  • Height off the ground. A deck off a walk-out basement needs taller posts, bracing, and longer stairs than one a step off the patio.
  • Decking material. Pressure-treated wood versus composite.
  • Railings and stairs. Wood, composite, metal, or cable rail, and how many steps.
  • A roof. A covered porch adds framing, roofing, and the tie-in to your house.
  • The ground. Slope, rock, and drainage at the footing locations.

Questions About Decks and Exterior Work

Do I need a permit to build a deck?

It depends on where you live and on the size and height of the deck. Requirements vary by city and county across the Upper Cumberland. We coordinate permits and inspections as part of the project, so you don’t have to sort it out alone.

Can you add a roof over my existing deck?

Often, yes, if the existing framing and footings can carry the added load. We’ll check what’s there first. Sometimes the right answer is a new frame under the new roof.

Do you handle storm damage and insurance repairs?

We take on select insurance and storm damage repair projects. Tell us what happened and we’ll let you know whether it’s a fit.

Should I choose wood or composite decking?

Choose wood if up-front cost matters most and you don’t mind regular maintenance. Choose composite if you want less upkeep over the years. We can price both so you can decide with real numbers.

What areas do you serve?
